Super Geezers hard at WORK! 10/7/10

I know, I know! The word hustle does not generally have nice connotations, but I thought considering the age of the workers at the Habitat House this morning on Plum St., they’d associate it more with a joyous dance done in the 70′s.

And joy there should be! This two story house is awesome! I got my own tour of the location and am inspired to see if they would like to be on the Old East Durham Open Home Tour (October 24, 1-4pm).

I’ve been so impressed with all the shaking and baking that Habitat Durham has been doing. Take a look at a few examples they have on Plum and Young streets.

Kelly Bryant Bridge Looks Gorgeous! September 17, 2010

On my way home tonight, as I turned a left onto Alston Ave to cross the bridge into my neighborhood, I noticed the beautiful blue lights of the Kelly Bryant Bridge. I beamed with pride at how good it looked against the night sky. I look forward to adding it to my walking/running routes.

Durham Recognized Nationally for Being Biking Friendly September 15, 2010

I have long enjoyed walking, jogging and running in my neighborhood for quite some time. The gorgeous canopy of trees over most sidewalks, being able to say hi and catch up with neighbors that sit on their front porch and taking in the unique architecture throughout my neighborhood makes the experience very enjoyable.

If that wasn’t good enough, Durham has now been nationally recognized as a Bicycle Friendly Community.

I’ve long suspected that bicycling for folks in my neighborhood was a strong interest. I have several neighbors that use bicycles almost exclusively for their transportation to work.

Celebrate the new bridge! September 15, 2010

Filed under: events — aidiloc @ 1:40 pm

East Durham was cut by the building of the Durham Freeway back in the 70′s and pedestrians that used to casually walk to the areas on the other side have now gotten back a beautiful bridge to let them connect with the community nearby. There is going to be a ceremony to celebrate the official opening of the Kelly Bryant Bridge. Details here: http://www.thedurhamnews.com/2010/09/14/203555/r-kelly-bryant-jr-bridge-opening.html

The Durham News recently reported that we have a new director for the East Durham Children’s Initiative (EDCI). I’ve had a chance to walk around the neighborhood and chat with Mr. Reese several times now. I actually have known him since college when I used to work with the Latino community at El Pueblo. He is a wonderful person for us to have working on this. Read more about his passion for our area.
